A MESSAGE FROM MONROE CITY R-1 SUPERINTENDENT MR. TONY DEGRAVE

Our newly constructed weight room is a great example of what can happen when a community strategically invests in its schools and works together to see a vision become reality. This project was made possible through the careful investment of funds from our 2023 bond issue, locally guided by MA Bank – Monroe City and the leadership of Mr. Darin Underhill and Mrs. Stephanie Baker.

The completion of this facility also marks another milestone of a series of improvements to our high school campus. These projects have included renovations to the band and chorus room, counseling department suite, high school library, alternative education classroom, History classrooms, and the installation of new interior doors throughout the high school.

Beyond providing our students with a state-of-the-art weight room, this project creates additional opportunities throughout our campus. The new facility allows us to expand space in the agriculture wood shop, convert the former weight room into a multipurpose classroom, and create more efficient inventory and storage space for our maintenance department.

Perhaps the greatest highlight of this project is that, from start to finish, it was completed entirely through the talents, labor, and commitment of local people and businesses:

▪️ Financial Guidance: MA Bank – Monroe City: Mr. Darin Underhill and Mrs. Stephanie Baker
▪️ Architectural and Design: Hutchinson Engineering: Mr. Michael Purol, Mr. Nolan Nichols and Mrs. Christina Cane
▪️ Concrete Work: Mr. Jordan Davis and Mr. Gabe Creel
▪️ Building Package: Robey’s Building Supply: Mr. Mike Robey
▪️ Construction of the Building: Mr. Tom Bock and Mr. Cade Chapman
▪️ Painting: Mr. Tom Smith and Mr. Johnathan Smith
▪️ Flooring: Mr. Brad Williams and Mr. Brian Utterback
▪️ Material Delivery: Mr. Josh Potterfield, Mr. Philip Potterfield and Mr. Jay Hufford
▪️ Equipment: Mr. Vince Smith
▪️ Internet and Security: Mr. David Hays, Mr. Royce Tharp, Mr. Gordon Gregg
▪️ Interior Design: A&S Printing: Mr. Darren Hays and Mrs. Ashley Rung
▪️ Install: Mr. Tom Bock, Mr. Mike Jones, Mr. Michael Shoemaker and Tripp, Mr. Derek Vanlandingham, Mr. Tanner Buckman

We also want to extend a special thank you to Mr. Eric Rodgers and Mr. Brock Edris for their vision, leadership, and countless efforts in helping make this project possible.

Over the past decade, our district has made significant progress in addressing its facility needs through the construction of several new buildings and major additions. With the completion of these projects, our focus now shifts from new construction to the renovation, modernization, and preservation of our existing facilities. Our latest facilities needs analysis identifies priorities within our older district buildings, including significant HVAC and roofing improvements. As we look ahead, our goal is to continue protecting the community’s investment while ensuring that every student has access to safe, secure, and modern learning environments.

This new weight room represents much more than a building. It represents the pride, commitment, and community support that make Monroe City R-1 such a special place for our students to learn, grow, and succeed.

Sincerely,
Mr. Tony Degrave
