The 1986 Panther boys did not have a starter over 6 foot tall and were picked to finish fourth in the Clarence Cannon Conference in the preseason coaches' poll. When the season ended in March, the black and gold possessed the state’s third place trophy with a 28-4 finish.
After storming through the Clarence Cannon Conference slate undefeated and claiming the Panthers’ first CCC title in 17 years, the team faced a 30-0 Blair Oaks team in the state quarterfinal round. Blair Oaks had a starting front line that stood 6 foot 10, 6 foot 6 and 6 foot 4. The Panthers raced to a 22-point halftime lead and cruised into the state tournament.
It seemed the whole town of Monroe City made the long trek to Springfield, Missouri, to see the hometown boys lose a heartbreaker to Cape Girardeau Notre Dame in the semifinals before coming back to defeat Pembroke Hill of Kansas City in only the second three-overtime game in the history of the state Final Four.
The team was coached by Dave Almany and assisted by Charles Causey. Mike Jackson, Rich Deien, and Ed Talton were All state and All Conference performers. James Walkup and Nathan Chitwood were senior starters. Rick Pfanner, Keith Robinson and David Hall were seniors who played critical roles.
